US Steel Gary Works employees pictured in 1912.  Gary, Indiana was named after Judge Elbert H. Gary, co-founder of US Steel. This coastal part of Northwestern Indiana was the chosen sight for the new steel company's operations, around which would form a community of actual people. To make a place for those people, US Steel created a subsidiary called the Gary Land Company.  That company's president, Eugene Buffington, had a dream;  "Gary is nothing more than the product of effort along practical lines to secure the right living conditions around a steel manufacturing plant."  The future was looking bright.
